Which products are excluded from CE marking?

Products are excluded from CE marking if they are not covered by the EU’s specific “New Approach” directives that mandate it. Generally excluded categories include chemicals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, foodstuffs, and most furniture. It is strictly illegal to affix a CE mark to a product for which it is not required.

The European market limits CE marking only to items where it is legally mandatory. Aside from the broad categories above, specific exclusions include:

• Antiques and Vintage Items: Items classified as true antiques or certain arts.
• Prototypes and Custom Designs: Devices in the design or prototype phase not yet ready for mass sale, or custom machinery made on an extremely limited scale.
• Personal Use Items: Products manufactured for personal, non-market use.
• Military & Police Equipment: Items exclusively intended for military or police use.
