Questions & Answers
Should batch numbers be included?
Yes, batch numbers or another unique identifier like a type or serial number must be included on consumer products sold in the EU. Under the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), this traceability requirement applies to almost all non-food consumer goods.
Traceability Rules:
- Type, batch, or serial number: Must be visibly marked on the product, its packaging, or an accompanying document.
- Small items exemption: If the product is too small to fit the code, it can go on the packaging or documentation instead.
- Manufacturer contact info: Must display the maker’s name, postal address, and electronic address.
Exceptions and Special Cases
- Food products: Follow separate food-specific rules which require specific production or lot codes.
- Translations: Batch codes and company names do not need to be translated into local EU languages, unlike safety warnings.
