Questions & Answers
Should the FCC ID appear on the packaging?
Yes, the FCC ID must appear on the packaging in specific situations, such as when a device uses electronic (e-labeling), when the product is too small to display a physical label legibly, or at the time of importation and marketing before sale.
When Required on Packaging:
- Small Devices: If a product is too tiny to fit a readable physical label and lacks a screen, the FCC ID goes in the manual and on the exterior packaging or via a removable label.
- Electronic Labels (E-Labels): Devices that show their FCC ID digitally on an internal screen must also display the FCC ID or a compliant identifier on the physical outer packaging or protective bag at the time of sale and importation.
- Import and Marketing: Devices must show the FCC ID on the device or its packaging at the point of entry and custom inspection so inspectors can verify compliance.
General Label Rules:
- Direct Placement: For standard devices, the FCC ID must be permanently affixed and clearly visible directly on the physical product itself (such as the outer case or inside a user-accessible battery compartment).
- Reference Lookup: You can research or confirm any valid number directly via the Federal Communications Commission search portal.
