(RED) 2014/53/EU

The Radio Equipment Directive applies to electrical or electronic products which intentionally emit and/or receive radio waves. Examples of radio equipment include televisions, mobile phones, bluetooth equipment and Wi-Fi products, and Internet of Things (IoT) equipment.

Radio equipment must be constructed so as to ensure :

  • the protection of health and safety of persons and domestic pets – including the maintenance of the objectives with respect to the safety requirements set out in the Low Voltage Directive;.
  • an appropriate level of electromagnetic compatibility as described in the EMC Directive;
  • an effective and efficient use of the radio spectrum.

The Radio Equipment Directive does not apply to:

  • equipment used by radio amateurs that is not made available on the market;
  • marine equipment covered by Directive 2014/90/EU;
  • aviation products covered by Regulation (EC) No 216/2008;
  • custom-built evaluation kits used by professionals for R&D objectives;
  • equipment used for public security, defence and state security.

Six steps to CE marking of Radio Equipment

1. Product classification

Determine whether the product falls within the scope of the Radio equipment Directive (RED) and/or other CE product regulations.

2. Risk management

An analysis to determine the risks and essential health and safety requirements applicable to your radio equipment.

3. Conformity procedure

Assessment of requirements established in step 2 in accordance with European harmonised or ETSI standards, including product testing.

4. Technical Documentation

Verify technical documentation, including markings, instruction manuals and labels.

5. EU Declaration of Conformity

Draw up the EU Declaration of Conformity in order to confirm compliance of the product with the CE product requirements.

6. Affix the CE marking

Provide instructions for affixing the CE marking in accordance with the requirements of the Radio Equipment Directive.
