Galileo capability for all smartphones sold in the EU

From March 17 2022 onwards, article 3.3(g) of the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU will be activated and it becomes mandatory for a smartphone manufacturer to check with the Notified Bodies for the delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/320. It requires smartphone manufacturers to ensure that the smartphone must support the function of accessing emergency services in order to sell devices on the European market. The motivation for E112 is to provide the caller location information to emergency services, which will allow emergency responders to get to the scene of an accident faster. So compliance with Galileo will be mandated for smartphones wishing to enter the European market.

At this moment there are no harmonized standards for E112, so smartphone manufacturers can not demonstrate conformity by self-declaration, hence a Notified Body must be involved for the device certification.
