When is UKCA mandatory?

For most general consumer goods in Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales), the UKCA mark is not strictly mandatory. The UK government indefinitely accepts the EU’s CE mark as a valid alternative, allowing businesses to choose which conformity mark they use.

However, you must use or heavily consider the UKCA mark in specific situations:

• Medical Devices & Construction Products: These sectors have their own specific timelines and varying requirements under sector-specific legislation.
• Northern Ireland: The UKCA mark is not used for goods placed on the Northern Ireland market. Northern Ireland primarily continues to require the CE mark or the UKNI mark.
• Commercial Demands: Despite being legally optional for most goods, many UK retailers, distributors, and public sector procurement tenders expect to see the UKCA mark, making it a commercial necessity in these sectors.
