Does UKCA require different testing?

In most cases, UKCA and CE testing do not require different physical tests. The underlying technical requirements and test standards for both are largely identical because UK laws were built by carrying EU directives over. You can usually use the exact same test data to achieve both certifications.

However, you must be aware of three key differences:

  • Testing Bodies: If your product requires third-party testing (for higher-risk items), CE testing must be done by an EU-authorized Notified Body, while UKCA testing generally requires a UK-approved body.
  • Sector Divergence: While standards remain mostly the same, they can diverge over time. Specific rules already vary for medical devices, construction products, and civil explosives.
  • Paperwork: You will need two separate Declarations of Conformity—one referencing EU legislation and another referencing UK legislation.
